Commencement

A beginning or a start.

It is that time of year when we receive graduation announcements from family and friends. I have received a few from former students. One who plans to continue her education in Germany. Another, who is planning to become a German teacher. I have also heard from former students who will be graduating this year; one that I wrote a recommendation for and received a $54,000 a year scholarship to attend a prestigious university. I have also heard from former students about their successes at college in their German classes.

Being a teacher might be the coolest profession.

Tonight I found one of my old teacher plan books from two years ago. Just for fun, I flipped to the month of April to see what I was doing. I was teaching profession vocabulary, the future tense, a novel in German, clothing vocabulary, gearing up to create finals, hosting a National German Honor Society induction ceremony, holding a parent meeting for a trip to Germany, observing students teach in other classrooms...it made me tired reading it.

Today I noticed...Lydia babbling more; really trying to communicate with me. She said mom, mom, mom, mom, mom. Shook her head no (and she meant it.) Gave me kisses on the lips for no reason. Discovered how to play with her fish toy in the bathtub. Played with sidewalk chalk for the first time. Took a nap on her tummy with her bum in the air. Carried a purse on her arm and walked around the house.

Teaching Lydia is the greatest profession.

I am grateful for the lessons that I am learning from my child. Each day is a new day, a fresh start. I still feel like I am in the beginning or commencement stages of being a parent...but I love every moment.

*I think it is important to step back every now and again and pay attention to the little things. As I teacher, I would get caught up in the planning, tests, grading and I would forget to focus on the students and the strides that they were making. Last week, I was getting tired of making lunches, doing laundry and changing diapers. But these days are not here forever. I am trying to savor and enjoy them.
